“Beyond” Ashtanga Yoga

Beyond Astanga  Yoga bases on the traditional method of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with the advantages of modern sport science to help the practicioner strengthen, and avoid stressing the joints & the weaker parts of the body–especially the knees, shoulder, and lower back.
It incorporates alignment and core strengthening from the Pilates method, the advantages of different forms of Yoga, and the sequencing of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system.

This unique combination of disciplines encourages a safe yet challenging practice, designed to meet individual needs rather then a “one size fits all” approach. There is a keen emphasis as well on the use of blocks, aids and preperatory exercises instead of suggesting that the practitioner push through postures that their bodies aren’t ready for–this supports a sustainable practice for any individual.

Beneficial postures can be practiced even if one is situated in a more advanced point in the Astanga sequences to prepare the body to cope with the challenges inherent to any level of Astanga asanas, i.e. calling on a posture of the intermediate sequence to prepare for backbends.

This method allows and encourages the strengthening of weaker parts of the body, which vary from person to person. The object is to help individuals develop balanced practices at their own personal levels!

There may be different approaches to an Asana that might be right depending on the practitioner and stage of practical development. Given the options described above, those involved in Beyond Ashtanga Yoga will have a chance to move deliberately into their individual practices and bodies, experientially.
